چکیده

[1] The absent or weak magnetic field above large Martian volcanoes may provide constraints on their formation and the carrier of magnetization. We consider the ability of magma intrusions to thermally demagnetize the shallow crust beneath volcanoes through heat conduction and hydrothermal circulation. If magnetization is dominated by magnetite, the volume of crust that is thermally demagnetized is similar to the volume of crust emplaced since the dynamo field disappeared. If magnetization is dominated by pyrrhotite, the volume of crust that is demagnetized is typically more than twice the volume of magma intruded. Hydrothermal circulation contributes negligible additional thermal demagnetization, beyond that from heat conduction alone, for permeabilities less than O(10 ) m. Citation: Ogawa, Y., and M. Demagnetization by Basin-forming Impacts on Early Mars: Contributions from Shock, Heating and Excavation

Introduction: When a large hypervelocity impact occurs on a planetary body such as Mars, the kinetic energy of the impactor is partitioned primarily into 1) kinetic energy of the planetary crust and mantle as they deform and flow in response to the impact, 2) heating, melting and vaporization of impactor, crust and mantle material and 3) shockwaves that travel throughout the entire volume of th...

Modeling of Cooling Plutons in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand

Modeling carried out using a super-critical version of TOUGH2 has been used to investigate different source models for the geothermal fields in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ), New Zealand. The models describe the cooling, by groundwater circulation, of magmatic intrusions into the upper 8 km of the crust. By comparing the calculated surface heat flux from these intrusions with actual thermal out...

Controls on Martian hydrothermal systems: Application to valley network and magnetic anomaly formation

[1] Models of hydrothermal groundwater circulation can quantify limits to the role of hydrothermal activity in Martian crustal processes. We present here the results of numerical simulations of convection in a porous medium due to the presence of a hot intruded magma chamber. The parameter space includes magma chamber depth, volume, aspect ratio, and host rock permeability and porosity. A prima...

Experimental Constraints on the Thermal Structure of the Martian Interior and Martian Magmatism

Introduction: Past space missions to Mars have provided important constraints on the planet's internal density distribution [1,2]. However, the thermal structure of the Martian interior remains highly uncertain. Although theoretical calculations have provided some basic knowledge of the thermal evolution of Mars [e.g., 3-9], the results from these computer simulations are strongly dependent on ...

A spectroscopic analysis of Martian crater central peaks: Formation of the ancient crust

[1] The earliest formed crust on a single plate planet such as Mars should be preserved, deeply buried under subsequent surface materials. Mars’ extensive cratering history would have fractured and disrupted the upper layers of this ancient crust. Large impacts occurring late in Martian geologic history would have excavated and exposed this deeply buried material. We report the compositional an...
